Recommended routings to Kilimanjaro International (JRO) by departure city.
Picking the right airline saves hours of transit, a layover night in a city you didn’t plan for, or about $1,500 over the course of a round trip. This is what we recommend, organised by where you’re flying from.
US East Coast
Best: JFK → Amsterdam (AMS) → JRO. KLM, single layover, 18 to 20 hours total. Our most-used routing for Northeast travellers.
Business class: JFK or BOS → Doha (DOH) → JRO. Qatar Qsuite, the best premium product on this route.
Value: JFK → Istanbul (IST) → JRO. Turkish Airlines, often $400 to $700 cheaper than KLM.
US West Coast
Best: LAX/SFO → Doha → JRO. Qatar offers daily direct from LAX to DOH; you arrive in JRO refreshed. Saves a night vs European routings.
Alternative: LAX → Amsterdam → JRO via KLM. Add 4 to 6 hours but cheaper economy fares.
Avoid: United via Newark to KLM connection — too tight, bag mishandling is common.
US Midwest
Best: ORD/IAH → Doha → JRO via Qatar. Reliable, one stop, 21 hours total.
Alternative: ORD → Amsterdam → JRO via Delta/KLM partnership. Strong loyalty programme overlap.
Note: Chicago to Addis Ababa (ADD) via Ethiopian Airlines is now non-stop — useful but the ADD-JRO leg has limited frequency.
Europe
Best: LHR/AMS/CDG → JRO direct. KLM and (seasonal) British Airways operate this route. Roughly 9 to 11 hours; arrives in JRO early evening.
Business class: KLM World Business Class is the consistent pick. BA has rolled out Club Suite on select rotations.
Note: Europe to JRO is the easiest journey in the world — one flight, manageable hours, no extra connection.
Middle East & Asia
Dubai (DXB): Emirates daily to JRO via Dar es Salaam, or Qatar via Doha. Comfortable, reliable.
Doha (DOH): Qatar direct to JRO, the gold standard. Daily.
Singapore: Best via SIN → DOH → JRO. Singapore Airlines partners with Qatar through codeshare.
South Africa & Australia
Johannesburg (JNB): Direct to JRO via South African Airways or Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Convenient for combining with a Cape Town stop.
Sydney/Melbourne: Via Doha or Dubai. Qatar Sydney to Doha to JRO is the most-recommended; ~28 hours but only two flights.
Note: Ethiopian via Addis Ababa is a growing alternative from Asia/Pacific origins.
