It's a night adventure for game viewing in the dark spell, starting before dinner or after dinner for a duration of about 2 or 3 hours.
This new experience comes with an extra cost and begins after a safety briefing on how it's conducted and what to look for. Basically, it's time to witness nocturnal animals like Aardvark, Porcupine, Pangolin, Owls, Civet or Bushbaby coming out from their hidden burrows, dens or caves and venturing out for night actions because they can't be seen or found in daylight drives. Lions and leopards are also more active at this time around, going out for the hunt.
Not all the parks permit a night safari, just a few like Tarangire NP and Manyara NP, or if you have a night stay outside Serengeti NP in areas where it's offered. Either in an open truck or a closed one, your tracker and guide will be searching for nocturnal animals with a strong spotlight, and a red/blue filter is also used so as not to damage the animal's sight when located.
Temperatures drop at night so a jacket or a blanket in the truck will keep you warm, and in a clear blue African night sky the stars will be out as there is not much pollution, for recognizing some constellations found in the Southern Hemisphere.
