The experience

What to expect on foot.

The ground beneath your feet becomes a storybook.

On a walking safari, you learn to decipher the cryptic language of footprints. You touch the flora that sustains this immense ecosystem. You watch a dung beetle’s tireless work, the delicate dance of a butterfly — the details often lost from a vehicle.

You discover ancient medicinal plants used for millennia, and feel the thrill of tracking game on foot. Led by Maasai warriors or park rangers, every walk becomes an intimate, sensory journey through the heart of the wild.

Serengeti on foot.

  • Central Serengeti. 1–3 hour walks from Mbuzi Mawe, Nanyukie, or the Four Seasons. A rare ground-level view of one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.
  • Wogakuria (North). A two-hour trek from Kuria Hills, guided by naturalists and armed rangers through granite kopjes and rolling hills.
  • Grumeti River. From Migration Tented Lodge, walk to the banks of the Upper Grumeti and watch resident hippos at eye level. Kirawira covers the lower river valley.
  • Mbalageti River. A 1.5-hour walk across the swing bridge into a thick gallery forest — cool air, spectacular bird life, surprising rainforest atmosphere.
  • Lake Ndutu (Dec–Apr). Walk the shorelines during the Migration’s calving season. Thousands of flamingos on the soda lake.

Walking with the Maasai.

  • Loliondo Walking Safaris. Private Loliondo Game Reserve from Taasa Lodge — leisurely strolls to strenuous hikes, led by Maasai warriors blending tracking with cultural insights. (Requires stay at Taasa.)
  • Olduvai Gorge & Maasai Boma. An hour’s walk near Olduvai with a Maasai warrior — tracking lessons and a visit to a traditional boma.
  • Tarangire walks. The best chance to encounter the elegant, shy lesser kudu on foot. From Tarangire Treetops or Swala Tented Lodge.

Off-the-beaten-path adventures.

  • Angata Kiti. A 2–4 hour hike through a valley in the Gol Mountains, starting at the granite monolith of Nasera Rock. Our favourite for witnessing the Migration on foot.
  • Olkarien Gorge. Through towering cliffs — primary nesting site of Ruppell’s griffon vultures. March is peak. Requires overnight at Woodlands Camp.
  • Empakaai Crater. A full-day descent 1,000 feet into a lush caldera. Soda lake shimmering with flamingos, dense forest walls hiding buffalo and bushbuck. Requires two nights on the crater rim.

Honest expectations

Know before you walk.

Walking is the most intimate way to experience the bush — but it’s a different kind of safari. Set fair expectations before you book.

  • 01

    Different from a drive

Walks aren’t about seeing the most animals — they’re about seeing the bush differently. Footprints, plants, insects, calls. If you’re chasing a leopard sighting, do a game drive. If you want to feel the land, walk.

  • 02

    Lodge-dependent

Many of the best walking safaris are exclusive to specific lodges (Taasa, Kuria Hills, Mbalageti, etc.). If walking is a priority, we’ll build your stay around those lodges.

  • 03

    Armed escort, always

Every walk in big-game country is led by an armed park ranger plus your guide. Non-negotiable safari standard. Listen to them; the bush respects no one.

  • 04

    Fitness matters (sometimes)

1-hour nature walks suit nearly anyone. Empakaai, Olkarien Gorge, and Angata Kiti are full-day efforts at altitude — tell us your fitness honestly so we recommend the right one.

  • 05

    Footwear & layers

Proper walking shoes (broken in). Layers for cold dawns and hot afternoons. Hat, sunscreen, water bottle. We send a packing list once your itinerary is set.

  • 06

    Cultural depth

The Maasai-led walks aren’t performances. Real bushcraft, real conversations. Ask questions — the warriors love it when you do.
