Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, Crater rim

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

The property

A stone-and-lava lodge cloaked in ivy and mist on the rim at 7,000 feet, arched passages, fireplaces, and picture windows onto the caldera.

An architectural tribute to the ancient world: walls of smooth, boulder-like lava rock draped in ivy, soaring ceilings and arched entrances that feel like a mist-shrouded citadel. Inside, lantern-lit passages, Maasai artifacts and ’cave-wall’ paintings stained into the stucco, warmed by fireplaces and framed by picture windows. It stands on the rim at 7,000 feet, and every view drops into the Garden of Eden below.

Where it sits

On the crater rim at 7,000 feet, with a surreal panorama over the ten-mile floor and its soda lake. Staying on the rim means the 6am descent puts you among the first vehicles down, watching the wildlife in dawn solitude.

The rooms

Seventy-five climate-controlled rooms, each with a private stone balcony for scanning the floor by binocular. Leather headboards, brass lamps and hand-drawn cave sketches on pale stucco give a tribal-highland character.
