The experience

Become a Legend of the Serengeti.

Maasai warrior skills.

Learn the ancient arts of bow and arrow marksmanship and spear throwing — properly taught, not staged for photos. Participate in a traditional Maasai dance, and discover the intricate beauty of Maasai beading and jewellery making.

For kids, meeting a real Maasai warrior who teaches them a real skill is the part of the safari they’ll talk about for years.

Step into a ranger’s shoes.

Learn to track wildlife by identifying footprints and spoor in the dust. Pick up essential Swahili phrases to communicate with your safari team — jambo, asante, karibu, simba.

By day three, kids are often spotting tracks the adults missed. That moment of expertise is the whole point.

The ultimate campfire.

At select Hemingway Camps, we provide complimentary S’mores kits for the perfect evening treat under the stars. Roasted on a real fire, eaten with sticky fingers, sitting around with parents and Maasai staff alike.

Pair this with cultural connections: visits to local schools, age-tailored, where Tanzanian students share stories with your kids. Often the most quietly powerful moment of the trip for the whole family.

Walking through history.

Explore the famous Olduvai Gorge and its interpretive centre on foot, standing at the very site where human history began.

For kids studying evolution in school, this is the textbook coming to life. For everyone else, it’s a deeply humbling place to bring your family.

Expand the adventure.

Looking to add more magic to your family itinerary? Consider:

  • The School of St Jude (Arusha). A heartwarming home visit with students from this world-renowned charity school.
  • Arusha Giraffe Center. Get up close with these gentle giants on a guided nature walk.
  • Nairobi wildlife icons. If your journey passes through Kenya, don’t miss the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or the Nairobi Animal Orphanage — conservation in action.

Honest expectations

What parents actually want to know.

The Junior Ranger Challenge is complimentary — but a few practical notes for families before you book.

  • 01

    Tailored, not generic

Activities are tailored to your child’s age and interests on the ground. A 6-year-old and a 14-year-old won’t do the same things. Tell us their ages and curiosities at the planning stage.

  • 02

    Woven, not bolted on

The challenge isn’t a separate “kids program” that runs alongside the safari. It’s built into the days — tracking lessons during game drives, Swahili over dinner, Maasai visits as a family.

  • 03

    Pacing matters more with kids

A 12-hour day of back-to-back game drives breaks children. We pace family itineraries with deliberate downtime, pool stops, and shorter drives. Less is more.

  • 04

    Lodge choice changes the experience

Not every lodge is set up for families. The Hemingway Camps that offer the S’mores tradition aren’t the same lodges that suit a quiet honeymoon couple. We’ll match the lodges to the trip.

  • 05

    School visits are real

The Tanzanian school visits aren’t a performance. They’re real children in real classrooms. We brief your kids before the visit — respect, curiosity, questions welcomed.

  • 06

    Safety, first and always

Every bush activity is supervised by our guides and (where required) an armed park ranger. Standard safari rules apply — kids stay close, listen to guides, no running in camp at night. We’ll cover all of this in your family briefing.

Ready to bring the kids?

Tell us your kids’ ages and curiosities — we’ll build a family safari paced for them.
