The experience
Inside the flight.
Serengeti seasons from above.
Ballooning is spectacular year-round. The Central Serengeti site offers reliable resident wildlife and river-valley views in every month.
For chasing the Great Migration: South Serengeti (mid-December to April), West Serengeti (June), and North Serengeti (early July to November) offer front-row seats to the thundering herds from the air.
5:00 AM. The pickup.
Your adventure begins in the dark. As you drive to the launch site, keep your eyes peeled — nocturnal predators are often still finishing their nightly hunts.
On arrival, you meet your pilot for a safety briefing. The balloons inflate like giants against the pre-dawn sky, breathing fire into the cool air. As the first blush of dawn hits the horizon, you lift off, leaving the world behind in silence.
The quiet hush.
You’ll experience the unmistakable quiet of morning as you soar over the savannah. From your vantage point, the landscape ignites in a crescendo of golden light.
Whether skimming the treetops or ascending to 1,000 feet, the scale of the African wilderness is humbling. Every flight is a gift from the winds — serenity and colour are the only guarantees.
An hour in the sky.
You’ll spend approximately one hour in the air, guided by your pilot through various altitudes.
While you drift, a professional ground crew tracks your progress from below — ready and waiting to greet you the moment your basket touches back down on the Serengeti floor.
The bush-breakfast tradition.
Celebrate your flight with a time-honoured tradition: a sparkling champagne toast at the landing site.
The magic continues with an Out of Africa-style breakfast served in the heart of the bush — fine linen, silver and china, tropical fruits, fresh breads, and a full cooked breakfast of eggs and sausage. The ultimate finale to an unforgettable morning.
Honest expectations
Know before you fly.
A balloon safari is a thrilling highlight for many — but we believe in total transparency. Set fair expectations before you book.
- 01
A shared experience
Flights are operated by Serengeti Balloon Safaris or Miracle Experience. We arrange this on your behalf — it’s not a private activity. You’ll share the magic with up to 16 guests in a large communal basket.
- 02
Time & opportunity cost
You’re in the air for about an hour, but the whole excursion — from the 5AM pickup to the bush breakfast — takes most of the morning. The balloon safari replaces your morning game drive that day.
- 03
Luck of the wind
The pilot can control altitude but not lateral direction. You go where the wind goes. You’ll only see animals directly in your flight path — even a massive herd visible in the distance may not be reachable.
- 04
Scenery, not guaranteed wildlife
This is primarily about the aerial perspective of the Serengeti landscape. Wildlife sightings can be spectacular (especially hippos in Seronera, or the Migration in specific months) but they’re not guaranteed.
- 05
Safety & risk
Ballooning has inherent risks. A fatal accident occurred in the Serengeti in 2010. Review the operator’s safety procedures with us before booking; all passengers sign a liability waiver before launch.
- 06
Camera gear
A camera is welcome — but due to space and the nature of the landing, we strongly recommend leaving large telephoto lenses on the ground.
